Thanks for showing interest in your trainer! Travis began his dog training career in May 2014 with one goal. To help people! At that time, it was to specifically help blind people. Travis has always loved working with people and loves when he can make a difference in their lives.
The first dogs Travis ever trained were Seeing Eye dogs that guide the visually impaired. This type of trainer is officially known as a guide dog mobility instructor…but that’s a mouthful!
A big part of training Seeing Eye dogs is also teaching people who can’t see. This taught Travis several very important lessons about dog training.
The first lesson is how to be a patient and calm teacher. He is excellent at understanding people’s needs, listening to their struggles, and providing empathy while his clients are learning. He is there for you because he knows you can feel defeated when your dog isn’t doing what you want.
Being a guide dog mobility instructor taught Travis another huge lesson. He had to be a very good dog trainer! The stakes are high when a dog is guiding a blind person. Travis learned how to train dogs thoroughly and efficiently, as well as, how to be creative when a dog is having an issue. Seeing Eye dogs have to learn many things most pet dogs never have to learn. This gave Travis an abundance of “tools” in his training “tool belt” that he can use when training your precious doggo!
Something else Travis learned while coaching blind people is that his teaching needed to be perfect. He became very good at describing how to handle a dog because he had to break it down for people that can’t see. It also gave Travis a knack for helping his clients grasp complex dog concepts. It’s always his goal to leave little room for confusion!
Travis began pet sitting as a side hustle when he started training Seeing Eye dogs. It wasn’t long before people started asking him to train their dogs. Travis enjoyed the extra practice and realized it was just as rewarding to help people who aren’t blind. Eventually Travis Trains Dogs was born!
As a private dog trainer Travis loves helping people get their pet dogs under control or conquer their fears. He loves meeting new people. He loves saying hello and seeing them breathe a sigh of relief when he tells them he can help. He loves saying goodbye and hearing people say they feel like they have a different dog than they did a month ago.
Between his pet dog training, pet sitting, and Seeing Eye dog training, Travis has worked with hundreds of dogs and clients. Each one has taught him something new and wonderful. He has loved helping every single dog and every single client and looks forward to working with you and your dog too!!
